Yeah, I got crushes pretty easily when I was younger. Most of my heavy crushes were for guys in school, not only because I saw them every day but also because they just seemed more likely (as George Carlin said of neighborhood girl fantasies: “Hey, this could happen!”). The possibility of dreams actually becoming reality always lent a little extra spice. J
Celebrity crushes were different. These guys were/are the ones that are totally unobtainable, completely out of reach of us mere mortals. They occupy a level we could never hope to ascend to. But daydreaming about celebrities often happened a lot more, simply because celebs are “safe” that way. There’s no real possibility of reality getting in the way and ruining a perfectly good fantasy. They’re not really “real”, so they’ll do whatever your imagination comes up with. Perfect.
I don’t get crushes often now, but when I do they tend to stick around longer. That’s not to say I don’t appreciate a good short-term “view”, if you know what I mean (several male Olympians come to mind). I just don’t get as worked up over them as I used to.
First crush, pre-high school. I never watched the Hardy Boys TV show, I just liked him as a singer. The funny thing is I never bought a single record of his!
Drool city, also before hitting high school. I had a soft spot for blondes at that age, but that didn’t last long. I actually met this guy at a sci-fi convention in Chicago some years back, and got him to autograph the only non-Star Wars-related pic of him I could find in the dealer’s room. He laughed when he saw it, and said it was from some award ceremony. I was amazed he could remember such a thing.
The quiet Beatle. I adored Paul (who didn’t), respected (even feared) John, was indifferent about Ringo, but George? Oh, man. Those eyes!! I was “the quiet one” at the time too, so I could relate. I was bonkers over him for years, and George is the one who started me swooning over guys with dark brown hair.
Simon and John were way too popular with the ladies, so I was drawn to another “quiet” musician. It was slightly weird that he looked so feminine all the time (he wore more makeup than I did!), but he seemed like a good guy. I even styled my hair like his once (see pic), but then changed it quickly because it looked AWFUL.
Another guitarist, late-80’s Australian synth-pop. He even sported a stylish ‘do that actually looked good on me; I wore it for years. By the time I met him he’d cut his hair pretty short and the band was trying really hard to sound American radio-friendly. I really lost interest after that.
A British transplant to Australia, and another crush I actually got to meet. He’s a cool guy, and the photo here is my own (woohoo!), yet when I met him (20 years after first getting into the group!!) I actually got along better with the drummer/singer! Weird. I hear reality kicking in the door…
The epitome of everything I’d ever want in a man: smart, funny, talented, and NOT American. J I still get goosebumps when I see him play.
I absolutely adore the character Data. I was not so impressed with the actor who portrays him when we met. ‘Nuff said there. But I still loooooove Data!
The only actor that doesn’t sing in this bunch, and probably the most “manly” too, LOL. It’s the dark hair and eyebrows. Seriously.
Yes, I know he’s gay. So what? I’d still love to hang out with him, he’s a complete nerd. I like nerds.
