Appearance – solid all-over dark red skin, tall 3.5”H, conical shape. Flesh is white w/just a bit of yellow.
Taste – One word: disappointing. I haven’t eaten a Red Delicious apple in well over a decade, and now I remember why. This quintessential American apple has almost no flavor, period! It’s very clean, only mildly sweet, but with almost no tartness at all. It is extremely juicy, so that’d make it refreshing, but with the lack of flavor it’d never be a candidate for juicing or use in other apple beverages. The skin is also a problem - while the color is nice, it has a distinctly bitter taste, thereby making a bland apple unpleasant. Plus, it's much harder to break through the skin (even with a knife) to get to the very crisp flesh underneath. It’s definitely the hardest apple so far; it has a nice crisp/crunch, but just breaking through the skin was more difficult than with all of the others. It also changes color super fast – not even 10 minutes after the first cut and the flesh was starting to brown. Eating this one right after experiencing the complexities of the Opal really shows the lack of flavor in the Red Delicious. I was very surprised; I wasn't expecting to dislike any apples but... the bottom line: it just doesn’t impress me.
