Firepit Pizzeria & Grill, 1029 E. Woodland Ave, Springfield, www.firepitpizzeria.com
Two small pizzas (12”!!), one cheese, one pepperoni, $16 and some change
Crust: This was very good, flavorful, firm and the pie-to-crust ratio was perfect. The “handle” had a really nice crunch to it, which made it really nibble-worthy.
Sauce: This had a very interesting flavor, but it was really hard to pinpoint what exactly was different about it; we’re still wondering. The distribution of sauce was heavier at the back of the crust/handle.
Cheese: Good, and cooked well.
Pepperoni: These were excellent – very meaty, and spicy.
We’ve got our first real disagreement on overall rating! Since Jano’s was the first truly good pizza we had during this taste test, they seem to be the benchmark upon which all others are judged. Only one pizza place has actually received a higher rating than Jano’s, and that was Goodfella’s. Unfortunately, all other pizzas we’ve tried have seemed to have been of lesser quality – some a lot, some just a little, but none of them have really come close to matching Jano’s pies. Until now.
Kevin wanted to give this pie a 3.8, putting it below Jano’s. I, however, wanted to give it a 4.2, putting it above Jano’s – mainly because of the crust. (Jano’s was overdone, tough and chewy – this was not) We both agreed it was a good pizza, and we’d not only recommend it to others but we’re perfectly willing to buy from them again. However, we could not come to an agreement on the rating. So – to settle this, we’re giving them the average rating from between our respective choices, which is actually the same rating that Jano’s got. (It would have been higher for them, if…well, scroll down and re-read their entry, LOL.) In the end, we both agreed: Firepit makes a really good pizza!
