Westgate Pub, 1021 West Chester Pike, Havertown, www.westgatepub.com
One large pizza, half cheese, half pepperoni, $11.35
Crust: Now this was strange! Parts of it were crunchy but bland flavor-wise, while other parts seemed on the stale side. Literally. Like half of it had been exposed to the air for too long. Weird! Otherwise the slices were marginally floppy but mostly stable, the taste was nothing special.
Sauce: There was not a huge amount of sauce on this pie (which I happen to like), but it was extremely unevenly distributed, and definitely heavier at the back/handle.
Cheese: Excellent, cooked well, and just enough of it.
Pepperoni: These were thin and not very spicy, and they had a decent quantity of them.
First, this is really more of a pub with a restaurant and take-out counter on the side. They only have one size of pie, so they lose points on that. The pie was also very greasy, and the cheese would slide off easily on the cheese-only side, but didn’t on the pepperoni side. This caused Kevin to deduct points because he really hates pies that fail the bite test, but I guess the pepperoni on my side acted like an anchor and held everything down. The crust was the only real odd part for me, I thought it was pretty good otherwise.
Clearly we differed on assigning points for the Westgate Pub. Kevin thought it was less than average and gave it 2.8 out of 5, while I thought it was slightly better than average and gave it 3.2. Average between the two – 3.0.
